Two Bandra boys recycled newspapers to plant 350 trees in a year.

George Remedios never knew his innocent initiative will turn into a cycle of plantation of hundreds of trees across the city. When he was a boy he planted a Christmas tree in the colony garden as the tree was too big for his home. Now at 31,founder of The Turning Tide, with his family friend Calvin Andrade has planted over 350 trees in the city in a span of a year .

Now here comes the interesting part, the funding comes from collecting recyclable newspapers and other recyclable items. People who are interested in planting trees give their recyclable items which both the guys sell to purchase sapling and seeds. Remedios who was an advertising professional quit his job because of an injury ,later on found solace in planting trees.

he says “People can reach us through facebook or whatsapp and we will collect the newspapers. We then use the money for seeds and plantation and making the soil fit for survival. We even make compost bins and recycle natural material to increase the fertility of the soil”. Further he says “people aren’t consistent and the subscriptions goes down eventually”. One needs to understand that ‘Swachh Bharat’ shouldn’t be a fad, it should a way of living.

#GarvHai on people like Remedios who are selfless when it comes to Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
